There are several reasons you might need a replacement credit card. Whether your card was lost, stolen, or damaged, or you simply changed your name, you can request a new one online, by phone, or via your credit card issuer’s mobile app.
Depending on your credit card company, you may be able to request a new card via mobile app, online, or over the phone.
When requesting a replacement, you’ll typically need to provide personal information to verify your identity, such as your name, address, birth date, and Social Security number. You’ll also need to state the reason for the request. If the card is missing or used fraudulently, the issuer will cancel it and issue a new card with a different account number. If the card is just damaged, you’ll receive a new card with the same account number.
When replacing a credit card, always dispose of the old one securely. The simplest option is to put it through a shredder. If you don’t have a shredder, destroy the EMV or RFID chip, demagnetize the magnetic strip, and cut the card into small pieces. Dispose of the pieces in different trash receptacles to prevent fraud.
For metal credit cards, the issuer usually provides a prepaid envelope for secure disposal. Alternatively, you can take the card to a bank branch for destruction or mailing.
Once your new credit card arrives, activate and sign it. If you have a new account number, update your credit card information on any websites or subscriptions where it is saved. This helps ensure you don’t miss any bill payments, which could lead to late fees or service cancellations.
Dealing with a lost, stolen, or damaged credit card can be stressful, but getting a replacement is straightforward. Follow the steps above to quickly get back to using your credit card worry-free.
