In the upper right-hand corner of the check, write the date. Use the format of month, day, and year. For example, August 1, 2023. Note that postdated checks might still be processed before the date you specify.
Below the date line, you’ll see “Pay to the order of.” Write the name of the person or organization you’re paying. For instance, if you’re paying rent, write your landlord’s name.
Next to the recipient’s name, there’s a box with a dollar sign. Enter the amount in numerals, such as 1,000.00 for a $1,000 rent payment.
On the line below the recipient’s name, spell out the amount in words. For example, “One thousand dollars and 00/100.” Draw a line after the written amount to prevent alterations.
The memo line in the lower left-hand corner is optional. You can use it to note the purpose of the check, like “rent.”
Sign your name in the bottom right-hand corner. Your signature should match the name printed on the check.
Keep track of your transactions by recording the check details in your checkbook register. This helps you reconcile your account with your bank statements.
